Jahrelang war die Vergütung von Managern in der Bankenwelt kein Thema für die allgemeine Öffentlichkeit. Mit Beginn der Finanzkrise im Jahr 2008 änderte sich dies schlagartig. Spätestens seit die von der Krise betroffenen Staaten als Retter der Banken fungieren müssen, reißt die Kritik an den Gehalts- und Bonuszahlungen der Bankmanagern nicht mehr ab. Die Öffentlichkeit, aber auch die Wissenschaft fragt sich, ob die Topgehälter noch zu rechtfertigen sind. Das Handelsblatt übertitelte im Februar 2009 einen – auf einer neuen US-Studie basierenden – Artikel mit „Banker sind überbezahlt – wie schon 1929″.
